Agatha All Along‘s sixth episode, “Familiar by Thy Side,” took MCU viewers back three years. That’s when Joe Locke’s Billy Maximoff first ended up inside the body of a young Jewish boy from Eastview. When Wanda’s Hex collapsed and her twins disappeared into the ether from which they came, her son transferred his consciousness into the body of the just-deceased William Kaplan. With no idea who he really was and where he really came from, Billy eventually found his way to Agatha Harkness’ door. But “Teen’s” past, which involved other members of Agatha’s coven, isn’t as important as his future. Like his mother he’s a very dangerous witch. Fortunately, he says he’s not looking for more power or even his parents on the Witches’ Road. Billy’s looking for his missing brother Tommy.

Poor William Kaplan. At his bar mitzvah party Patti LuPone’s palm reader Lilia saw the terrible fate that awaited him. She saw his life split in two. She also foresaw his second life would need to be kept secret from witches, even herself. Lilia was the one who placed the sigil spell on him.

Soon after William’s palm reading, his party had to evacuate because something was happening with the Hex in the neighboring Westview. The bar mitzvah was taking place during what was the finale of WandaVision. As William and his parents raced home they saw the Hex contracting, but the chaotic scene distracted his mother and she crashed.

The impact instantly killed her son William. Only neither his parents nor the police officer who responded (none other than protector witch Alice Wu-Gulliver) realized William had died. To them he was fine, because when the Hex vanished and took Wanda’s kids with it, Billy unintentionally took over William’s body. Viewers knew it was really Billy because “William” screamed out, “Tommy!,” the name of his speedster twin.

For the next three years William/Billy kept his secret. He pretended amnesia was the reason he couldn’t remember anything from before the accident. The one thing he knew for sure was that he had died. He also knew there was something very different about him, because he could now hear peoples’ thoughts when they got emotional.

Determined to find the truth about what happened the day of the crash, he sought out answers from those who had lived in the Hex. The people of Westview refused to discuss the truth, which the government claimed had been a failed Avengers training exercise. The only person with firsthand experience who would talk was Evan Peters’ Ralph Bohner. He reluctantly told William/Billy about Agatha Harkness and how she was trapped in Westview. Ralph also revealed Wanda and Vision had two children, Billy and Tommy.

Thanks to Agatha’s remarkable online presence, Billy learned she was a centuries old witch blamed for some of the most famous calamities of the last few centuries. He also learned about the Witches’ Road and how he might help Agatha break free of the curse his mother Wanda had placed on “Agnes.”

After getting to see the absurd real-world side of Agatha’s cop drama delusion, the show sped through their interactions on Agatha All Along back to the present. That’s where Agatha climbed out of the muck and back onto the Witches’ Road to confront Billy. She called him “special” and praised him for his amazing powers. Sure he’d broken the rules, but that’s exactly why he had survived, just like she had long ago in Salem. It was something to celebrate not punish. And so what he’d seemingly killed Lilia and Jen? Agatha had killed plenty of witches herself. The important thing was they were both still alive and ready to finish The Road.

“Teen” didn’t like being compared to Agatha. He didn’t want to go on with her, either. But when he realized he can’t yet control his incredible witch powers he reluctantly agreed to travel with her, even though he will (wisely) never trust her.

Billy has no choice if he hopes to get the one thing he wants. He said he knows his brother Tommy is still out there somewhere. He just doesn’t know where or how to reach him. Only by finishing The Road, something the internet somehow also knows only Agatha Harkness has ever done, can Billy get his brother back.

Marvel Studios

Agatha better hope that’s really what Billy Maximoff wants. The Scarlet Witch’s son is young and inexperienced, but he is not someone to be trifled with. He hasn’t even begun to tap into his awesome power yet. The fact he has all his mother’s rage makes his lack of magic control even more troubling. (He’s also her “tell” which only Agatha knows.)

Rage and uncontrolled power is a dangerous combo for Agatha and anyone else foolish enough to get in his way. If he decided there’s a greater reward then finding Tommy it could change the MCU forever.
