George R.R. Martin Says THE WINDS OF WINTER ‘Still a Priority’ Michael Walsh | amznusa.com

The Winds of Winter is now 13 years (and counting) overdue. And no one, despite what some frustrated readers might think, is more aware of that fact than George R.R. Martin himself. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the author said even he can’t believe he’s taking this long to finish the next installment of A Song of Ice and Fire. Don’t give up on him or the book just yet, because he hasn’t. Even with all of his other literary and TV projects, Martin says The Winds of Winter is “still a priority.” Only, he can’t guarantee his doubters won’t end up being correct.

Martin spoke to THR‘s Lily Ford to discuss the short films he’s financing based on the works of his late friend Howard Waldrop. Towards the end of the interview Ford asked about everyone’s favorite/most frustrating unfinished novel, The Winds of Winter. Ford refers to it as the “long-awaited sixth and final book” from A Song of Ice and Fire. That’s either a simple mistake or the biggest literary scoop of the year, because the truly maddening thing about Winds is that it’s not the final book Martin has planned. The planned ending for A Song of Ice and Fire is a seventh installment, A Dream of Spring.

As for the tardy sixth book, Martin is very aware how long he is taking. “Unfortunately, I am 13 years late,” he said“Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time.”

Same, George. Same.

Unlike some of his more morbid readers, which he’s obviously very aware of, Martin still believes he will complete the novel he calls a priority. Only, he can’t guarantee his biggest skeptics won’t ultimately turn out to be correct. Martin said, “A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

And since he also said he’s not the retiring type and doesn’t golf, what else would he do?

Write a little faster, we hope.
