Let’s take a look inside Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes.

Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes: Exclusive Look at Grog Strongjaw’s Weapons

We have to ask… Has Grog ever looked better than he does in these pages from Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes? We have to say, we don’t think he has. The level of care and detail that illustrator Ana Fedina has put into Grog, his tattoos, outfit, and most importantly, weaponry, would be enough to drop even the strongest of jaws. We know our jaws are certainly wide open. The beauty and intricacy of these drawings are some of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen, Critical Role-wise, but also full stop. We’re going to need Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes to publish some of these works as posters for our wall.

But if Grog is one of your Critical Role favs, Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes will allow you to do more than just gawk at him (and his INSANELY detailed accessories.) It will also give you a thorough run-down of his tools of the trade, in this case his “Belt of Dwarvenkind” and his “Blood Axe.”

Among other things, Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes reveals, “Once wielded by Grog’s terrible and bloodthirsty uncle Kevdak, former leader of the Herd of Storms, this dark metal axe passed into Grog’s hands when he defeated his uncle in one-on-one combat, with Vox Machina at his back. With some necrotic magic within the steel and crimson-edged axe, Grog was bolstered by this weapon’s enchantment, dealing death in more ways than one, gaining vitality for each enemy struck down. But unlike some of his other weapons, the Bloodaxe had no mind of its own, and thus Grog was kept safe.”

The book is also punctuated by relevant in-universe quotes that add to the immersion of the text.
D’Rishk Dawnscale, for instance, shares, “I know he is of the giantkin, and thus more robust than I and certainly heartier than I, but how Grog Strongjaw traipsed about Exandria in little more than a huge belt and ill-fitting pants is truly beyond me. When asked at one time, he responded by saying, ‘My weapons keep me warm!’ and then he growled, as though that was a suitable answer, and it was the questioner who was rude. And maybe they were.”

Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes: Exclusive Look at Nott the Brave/Veth Brenatto’s Arsenal

We’re once again completely enamored by the gorgeous rendering of Nott/Veth in this book. Yes, Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes is meant to highlight the weapons of our great heroes, but it really does a huge service to the characters themselves. We just cannot stop looking at these pages, and they leave us dreaming of how beautiful the rest of the book will be.

Looking at Nott the Brave/Veth Brenatto’s spotlight, we get to dive into her Doll Half-Mask and Tinkertop Bolt Blaster 1000. An iconic name. But what really catches our eye is the gorgeous ode to Nott the Brave/Veth Brenatto, penned by Tallulah Fontaine. This emphatic and impassionedly told tale of Nott the Brave/Veth Brenatto reminds us that it’s not just the artwork that’s lovely in Critical Role: The Armory of Heroes, nor just the weapons that are iconic, but the writing itself invites you to pore over every word. Kudos to author Martin Cahill.

Tallulah Fontaine shares:

As a fellow green gal, I feel close to the story of Veth Brenatto, who for a while, hid behind a different name. Nott the Brave is who emerged from the forests of Felderwin, but it was Veth Brenatto who gave herself to the goblin hoard and bought her husband and son enough time to escape. It was Nott the Brave suddenly in a body that was not hers, feared and seen as monstrous, just as much as it was Veth Brenatto who could not bear to call herself thus as a goblin.

While she’s in her transformed state, we have to remember this, friends: Nott never stopped being Veth, and when she became a halfling once more, Veth didn’t let go of Nott. Being a goblin taught that halfling sharpshooter things she never could have learned, and a life as a halfling gave that goblin things to live for when all she wanted was to dive into a sea of booze and never surface. Yes, it was a curse that made Veth into Nott. And yes, a spell returned her to the body she knew was always hers. But magic one way or the other cannot account for the bravery, the skill, and the massive heart that belonged to both women, and as the stories say, no magic ever took that away from her. Both of her.
