Until this year’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the FF franchise had so many false starts and botched movies, it could provide substance for a truly great documentary. But perhaps the most disliked version of Marvel’s First Family is 2015’s Fantastic Four, directed by Chronicle’s Josh Trank. That film was an outright disaster, cratering the franchise for a decade. Many things went wrong behind the scenes, and most of its stars are reluctant to talk much about it now. But in an interview with Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show (via Variety), we learned that iteration’s Reed Richards, Miles Teller, lays the blame squarely on one individual. Below is what Teller said:
It’s unfortunate for that, because so many people worked so hard on that movie. And honestly, maybe there was one really important person who kind of f***ed it all up. When I first saw the movie, I remember talking to one of the studio heads and said, ‘I think we’re in trouble.’
Miles Teller does not name names here. But we’re going to go out on a limb and say that the important person he’s referring to is likely director Josh Trank. Apparently, Trank and Teller did not get along on set at all, and that’s putting it mildly. Before the 2015 Fantastic Four even hit theaters, Trank bashed the finished product on social media. He called it a far cry from the film he set out to make. Trank then didn’t direct another film for five years, until 2020’s Capone starring Tom Hardy.
Fox put the Fantastic Four franchise on ice for a decade, until this summer’s MCU reboot, which pleased most fans and critics. Could the 2015 Fantastic Four have worked out with a less toxic set? Who knows. The grittier take Fox wanted seems antithetical to what makes the FF brand beloved. So it may have been doomed (pun intended) no matter what.
