Every time Christopher Nolan releases a new film, it’s a real event. But it’s especially true after winning the Oscar for Oppenheimer. Add to that, his follow-up being his first mythological epic? Even more so. Next summer’s The Odyssey features an all-star cast, and we’ve got some first-look images via Empire Magazine, with our first good look at Tom Holland as Telemachus, son of Odysseus, played in the film by Matt Damon. We also get a good look at Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar star Anne Hathaway in the role of Penelope, wife of Odysseus, whom he spends a decade trying to reach. You can check them both out below:
Also starring in The Odyssey are Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, and Benny Safdie. Dozens of other well-known names fill out the smaller roles. The Odyssey has a proposed $250 million budget, the biggest of Nolan’s entire career. But he’s definitely one of the few directors in Hollywood who is bankable to that extent these days. Nolan shot The Odyssey all over the globe, entirely in IMAX, including in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Los Angeles.

This will not be a more grounded take on Homer’s epic poem, taking out the mythological, as one might expect from Christopher Nolan. This will feature all the Greek gods of ancient myth from Homer’s story, like Athena and Poseidon. Not to mention the witch Circe, played by Charlize Theron. However, just how Nolan intends to present those characters remains a mystery. Even if Nolan leans into the fantastical, we can’t imagine it will look like a Clash of the Titans redux. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will arrive in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026, in IMAX 70 mm film formats.
