Vecna’s Ultimate Goal on STRANGER THINGS 5 and How The Party Can Defeat Him Michael Walsh | amznusa.com

This post contains major spoilers for Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, and Vecna’s nefarious plans and goals on Stranger Things. If you want to avoid them like Henry Creel avoids that cave, check out our spoiler-free review of Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, instead.

It turns out, Vecna does not want to conquer the real world and reshape it in his twisted image. Instead, Stranger Things 5, Volume 2 revealed Vecna’s true goal and plan; he wants to merge two worlds together to create something new and awful that he will rule over. We now know how Vecna wants to do exactly that. But Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, also revealed how Hawkins’ Party plans to defeat Vecna and hopefully stop him forever… It turns out both sides need the Upside Down if they hope to win.

During Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, Dustin discovered that the Upside Down is not another dimension or world. It’s not even where Vecna lives. The Upside Down is a wormhole that Eleven accidentally created when Brenner had her remotely searching for Henry. Eleven had banished One/Henry Creel to a world Dustin has now dubbed the Abyss. Vecna resides in the Abyss (also called Dimension X in the Stranger Things stage play). He only uses the Upside Down as a bridge to reach the real world. But access to two worlds is not enough for Vecna on Stranger Things; he now plans to use The Upside Down to create a new world entirely.

What is Vecna’s Ultimate Goal on Stranger Things?

Vecna cursed and killed four kids in Stranger Things 4. The power generated from those murders opened giant rifts between the Upside Down and the real world. He’s now creating rifts between the Upside Down and the Abyss, where he resides, too.

Vecna’s ultimate goal is not to simply conquer the real world on Stranger Things. No, Vecna’s plan is to create something entirely new by smashing together the real world and the Abyss. He’s pulling them together—literally—so they will merge. Vecna then intends rule over this newly created Stranger Things dimension; that’s the goal he’s been after all along.

Why Does Vecna Need Kids to Pull Off His Plan on Stranger Things 5?

Vecna initially needed Will to help him open up portals between the Upside Down and the real world back in Stranger Things 2. He chose Will because he needed someone to amplify his powers, and kids are easily controlled. Vecna targeted Will because he believed Will was especially weak. He then opened up more rifts with his four Stranger Things 4 deaths. As mentioned, Vecna also created rifts between the Abyss and the Upside Down. But Vecna is not just opening rifts anymore; his goal is grander than that. He is physically pulling the Abyss towards the real world as he does. For that, he needs many more children, because it requires far more power to move a whole world than it does to simply enter one or make a few underground tunnels.

Why does Vecna need 12 kids exactly for his plan to succeed on Stranger Things 5? We don’t know, but it’s possible there’s some connection between the number 12 and the time-hating/time-obsessed Henry Creel. (Vecna would not have been able to move forward with his plan without Holly in Stranger Things 5, so he really did need all 12 kids to pull it off.)

Vecna Has a Hand-like Creature Pulling the Abyss and the Real World Close Together in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2

What we do know is that Vecna has the kids hooked up to a living, breathing, sharp-toothed creature* that looks like a monstrous hand on Stranger Things, almost as if it’s literally pulling on the Abyss. Stranger Things did not give any specifics about the nature of Vecna’s creature, but it’s truly monstrous both inside and out. We do know that “The Hand of Vecna” is a Dungeons & Dragons artifact of immense and evil power. The Hand of Vecna allows its wearer to cast finger of death, sleep, slow, and teleport… All of which seem relevant to Vecna’s interests and goals. But it’s hard to say if this is relevant to Vecna’s creature on Stranger Things, or just a fun reference.

If Vecna is successful, he will smash the Abyss into the real world, destroying both worlds in the process of making something new. But the Party has a plan to stop him for good.

What is the Party’s Plan to Defeat Vecna in the Stranger Things Series Finale?

The Party finally knows exactly what the Upside Down is, where the kidnapped children are, and Vecna’s ultimate plan. They also have a plan to save the kids and their world. Here’s what our team of heroes comes up with to defeat Vecna in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2.

Eleven cannot reach into Vecna’s when he’s in the Abyss, where he is now in Volume 2. Vecna’s body is currently attached to his hand monster, which also now contains 12 kids who have vines down their throats, pumping dark particles inside of them to amplify his powers. To access Vecna’s mind remotely, Eleven has to get close. The problem for the Party is that they cannot simply fly up into the Abyss. Even if they commandeered a helicopter and flew it 2,000 feet above the Upside Down, they wouldn’t fit through the small rifts into that dimension. The rotors are way too big.

Steve’s “Beanstalk” Plan Will Allow Eleven to Get Close Enough to Get Into Vecna’s Mind and Stop Him From Fulfilling His Goal

So instead, they’re going to use a “beanstalk” to defeat Vecna on Stranger Things. Steve came up with a “genius” plan to use the massive radio tower as their way to get up high enough to reach the Abyss. Vecna’s goal is to pull his dimension closer to the real world. He’s pulling it across the bridge/wormhole that is the Upside Down. The Party is going to use the Upside Down in their plans to defeat Vecna, too. They went into the wormhole fully armed. They’re going to climb up the radio tower that exists inside the Upside Down. When it “pokes” through into the Abyss, Eleven will be able to remotely access Vecna’s mind… and hopefully defeat him once and for all on Stranger Things.

Brenner’s Bath Will Amplify Eleven’s Powers, Hopefully Enough for Her to Defeat Vecna

But how will Eleven be strong enough to destroy Vecna once and for good on Stranger Things? The Party has a plan in place for this as well. Eleven will amplify her powers with Brenner’s bath/Sensory Deprivation chamber. It still exists in the Upside Down because it is frozen in time at the moment she created it on November 6, 1983. She was in that bath when she made contact. She’ll be inside it when she goes to battle with Vecna. (Of course, theres no water in the Upside Down, and it didn’t seem like the Party loaded any into their van. So, hmmm…..uh oh?)

Eleven will also have a distinct advantage as she fights Vecna one final time on Stranger Things. She won’t be alone in his mind. Max will be there to guide Eleven, as Max has almost two years’ worth of experience in Henry/Vecna/One’s mind. Kali/Eight will also go with her sister to fight Vecna. Will will also accompany Eleven. He’s able to tap into the Hive Mind as well. Now that he’s shared his queerness with his loved ones and they accepted him, Vecna can no longer prey on his secret fears of being abandoned for this truth. Presumably, while those four battle Vecna in his mind in Stranger Things 5‘s finale, the rest of the Party will deal with all of the monsters Vecna controls as part of his hive mind in the Upside Down.

Unfortunately, the Party might also have to deal with another force as they try to defeat Vecna on Stranger Things.

What Problems Could the Party Face During Its Final Battle With Vecna on Stranger Things?

Despite learning about Vecna’s massacre at the MAC-Z, Dr. Kay is still singularly focused on finding Eleven. She only cares about restarting Brenner’s program, and she needs Eleven’s blood to do that. Kay foolishly ignored the existential threat Vecna poses and tasked Akers with finding “the girl.” He then figured out she was going to the Upside Down and ordered his men to follow her.

The Party might have to fight not only Vecna, but the military, to protect a vulnerable Eleven while she’s in her sensory deprivation bath. Even if the soldiers don’t capture Eleven, even distracting or delaying her might weaken the Party enough for Vecna to prove victorious. But it’s not impossible that Akers, who questioned Kay’s decision-making, could also end up being an unexpected ally. If he sees what’s really going on and what’s at stake, the soldiers could potentially help to defeat Vecna at the end of Stranger Things. So long as they think to bring some flamethrowers with them.

It might also help if the military brings some bombs.

The Party Plans to Defeat Vecna AND to Destroy the Upside Down in the Stranger Things Series Finale

It’s not enough to beat Vecna once and for all on Stranger Things and prevent his goals from coming true. It’s not enough to just save Holly and the other kids, either. So long as the Upside Down exists, the real world is at risk. Some other monster from the Abyss, possibly even the Mind Flayer, could always use the Upside Down as a bridge in the future to cross back into Hawkins. The only way to keep the world truly safe is to blow up the wormhole that endangers it. The Party plans to do exactly that; they’re going to destroy the Upside Down.

After they beat Vecna, the Party will head back to the real world. On their way back, they’re going to destroy the “exotic matter” device that keeps the Upside Down stable. Without Brenner’s science machine, the walls of the Upside Down will fall, and the entire bridge will get sucked into nothingness. With the Upside Down gone on Stranger Things, no creature from the Abyss will ever be able to get back to the real world.

That is, unless Eleven or someone like her makes a new bridge. That’s something Kali wants to guarantee never happens.

Why Does Kali Want Her and Eleven to Die with the Upside Down?

Kali believes the only way to end the “cycle” that started with Henry Creel is for both her and Eleven to die. So long as they live, especially Eleven, Dr. Kay or her replacement will inevitably track down Eleven, kill the people she loves, and restart Brenner’s program. Eleven’s blood will be used to make someone like her, and that person will eventually create a new bridge to the Abyss.

Kali wants them to stay in the Upside Down after they defeat Vecna, so the cycle ends forever with their deaths. Eleven seems willing to make that sacrifice, but Hopper will never allow that to happen.

Will Kali ensure Eleven dies? Or will Hopper guarantee Jane lives? A whole lot has to go right for the Party before that even matters. They first have to stop Vecna from destroying two worlds to make a new one. Now we just have to hope their beanstalk plan to defeat Vecna works.

Stranger Things 5 Volumes 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix. Stranger Things 5, Volume 3, or Stranger Things 5: The Finale will arrive on December 31 at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET.
