In Stranger Things 5, Volume 1, the series teased a major cameo. In the end, we learned that Linda Hamilton’s Dr. Kay had been keeping Kali/Eight, Eleven’s sister and fellow psychic child born of Dr. Brenner’s experiments, in her compound in the Upside Down. Stranger Things 5, Volume 1 revealed Kali/Eight’s cameo to us very late in its episodes, so we never learned why Dr. Kay was keeping the psychic child prisoner. But now, Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, reveals why the military doctor needed Eight. And more importantly, why Dr. Kay wants to capture Eleven so badly on Stranger Things 5. It’s a nefarious reason that might just spell Eleven’s death… But not in the way we think. Tread carefully, because we’re about to delve into spoiler territory for Eleven, Eight, and Dr. Kay. If you don’t want to read any of that, head toward our spoiler-free review of Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, instead.

What Is Dr. Kay’s Plan in Stranger Things 5? Volume 2 Reveals the Purpose of Kali’s Cameo
In Stranger Things 5, Volume 1, we thought Dr. Kay’s chief purpose was to conduct research on the Upside Down to understand why people were dying in Hawkins. We came to understand that Dr. Kay’s chief mission was to find Eleven because she felt like Eleven was the cause of people dying and all the other mayhem happening in the town. Dr. Kay made it clear in Stranger Things 5, Volume 1, that she didn’t care if Eleven was good or bad; she just needed her. And we thought that was because Dr. Kay wanted to stop the Upside Down; she merely didn’t care about the costs. But in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, we learn about Dr. Kay’s true plan, the reason she kidnapped Kali/Eight and wants Eleven so badly… and it is MUCH more evil than we expected.

Stranger Things 5, Volume 2 reveals to us that Dr. Kay’s plan and the reason for Kali/Eight’s cameo in Stranger Things is that Dr. Kay wants to restart Dr. Brenner’s program. She wants to make more psychic children that have superpowers and can open portals into the Upside Down, The Abyss, and perhaps other worlds. NO, THANK YOU!
Dr. Kay Wants to Resurrect Brenner’s Program and Make More Psychic Children Like Eleven and Eight in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2
Kali/Eight tells the whole story of Dr. Kay’s evil plan to Eleven in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2. She reveals that Dr. Kay kidnapped her, killing all of her friends. Yes, Kali/Eight’s found family was murdered by Dr. Kay, RIP. Dr. Kay seemingly got her hands on Dr. Brenner’s research before Stranger Things 5 and decided that it would be a good idea to continue the dead man’s work. Kali/Eight didn’t know this initially; all she knew was that Dr. Kay kidnapped her and then kept taking her blood… an endless amount of it. Kali/Eight tells Eleven she thought of her as a vampire… But for now, Dr. Kay appears to be just an evil human on Stranger Things, an even worse creation. Kali/Eight thought she could only escape Dr. Kay by dying, but one day, she pretended to pass out, then attacked and fled.

Is Dr. Kay a Vampire on Stranger Things 5?
Okay, we’re mostly joking, but we have to stop and ask, is Dr. Kay a vampire on Stranger Things 5? Dr. Kay’s noticeably pale complexion now seems like a fun bit of foreshadowing. Dr. Kay really does look like a vampire! She probably isn’t really a vampire, but… we had to say it.
Dr. Kay Is Trying to Infuse Pregnant Women with Kali/Eight’s Blood to Make More Psychic Kids

Dr. Kay may not be a vampire, but she’s certainly up to no good. Kali reveals to us in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, she saw something horrific on the other side of the door to her prison: Dr. Kay’s continuation of Dr. Brenner’s program. Kali explains that she found a room of pregnant women. And she understood why Dr. Kay had brought them to her compound in the Upside Down. Dr. Kay and her minions were infusing pregnant women and their unborn children with Kali/Eight’s blood on Stranger Things 5.
This is a mirror of the way that Dr. Brenner had once infused pregnant women with Vecna/Henry/One’s blood in his MKUltra experiments to create Eleven, Eight, and the rest of the psychic children. But the blood was not taking in Dr. Kay’s version of the program, and all the pregnant women and their children were dying because Eight’s blood was not sufficient for Dr. Kay to create new psychic children on Stranger Things 5.
Kali’s Blood Is Not Powerful Enough to Create New Psychic Children, Dr. Kay Needs Eleven
Vecna/Henry/One Recieved His Blood Straight From the Upside Down
Unlike Dr. Kay, Dr. Brenner was in possession of a child who received his Upside Down transformation straight from the source on Stranger Things. The play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, reveals to us that when Henry Creel/Vecna was originally flayed by the Mind Flayer, the particles that entered into him physically changed his blood, giving him powers. And it was this changed blood from Henry/Vecna/One that allowed Dr. Brenner to create his other children. Dr. Brenner tells Henry/Vecna/One in Stranger Things: The First Shadow, “We’ve had ten children survive the transfusion so far. All of them special. And none of it would have been possible without you. Without your blood. You’re as much a father to this family as I am, Henry.”

But it seems like even Henry/Vecna/One’s special blood, fresh from the Mind Flayer as it was, could only create a certain amount of strength in “his” psychic children.”
Kali/Eight’s Blood Is Not Strong Enough to Create New Psychic Kids on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2

As Kali reveals on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, when Dr. Kay tried to emulate Brenner using Kali/Eight, she found that Kalie/Eight’s blood was not working. Even Henry/Vecna/One’s blood only managed to create a single kid that wasn’t a “pale imitation” of him and his powers. And that child, made in the image of Henry/Vecna/One, is Eleven, of course.
And now we know why Dr. Kay is so desperate to find Eleven on Stranger Things 5. Without her, she can’t fully restart Brenner’s program and make more psychic kids like Eleven and Vecna. Eleven’s blood is the only blood, aside from Henry/Vecna/One’s and a direct line to the Upside Down/The Abyss, that can make more children with powers. But, of course, this realization means that Eleven is not safe and can never be, as long as her powerful blood is in her veins.
What Makes Eleven’s Blood the Most Powerful on Stranger Things?

Why is Eleven the only psychic child to come out of Dr. Brenner’s program powerful enough to create other psychic children? The truth is, we just don’t know. But it seems Vecna/Henry/One could recognize how much she took after him in terms of her powers. We guess that’s why he selected her to be the only child who survived his massacre of Hawkins Lab. It will be interesting to see if Stranger Things 5‘s final chapter tells us any more about what makes Eleven so special, even among special children.
Why Does Dr. Kay Want to Restart Dr. Brenner’s Program and Create More Psychic Kids?

It seems like Dr. Kay is truly evil after all and has NOT learned her lesson. In Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, it seems clear that Dr. Kay wanted to restart Dr. Brenner’s program and create more psychic kids because she wants to break into the Upside Down, the Abyss, and other scary worlds to harness their powers and creatures for the United States military. Even after all the chaos, Dr. Kay still laments that they can’t use the Demogorgons against the Soviets. Kindly wake up and smell the bloodshed, Dr. Kay.
Kali Wants Her and Eleven to Die Alongside Vecna to Prevent New Portals Opening Into the Abyss
But where does that leave Eleven? Kali/Eight thinks she knows the answer on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2. Kali thinks she and Eleven should willingly die alongside Vecna, and then there would be no more special, power-giving blood in the world with which to create new psychic children, who could create new portals, who could allow another disaster such as this one to occur.
Eleven says that she thinks that she and Kali could live, but Kali does not share that outlook. Kali tells Hopper, “Killing Henry won’t end this.” Because if Eleven is still alive, then the Upside Down and The Abyss can just be accessed all over again. Instead, she tells Eleven in Stranger Thing 5, Volume 2 that even if they blow up Dr. Kay’s lab and end her efforts to restart Dr. Brenner’s program, it won’t matter. The “cycle” will continue so long as Eleven lives. Someone will eventually come after her and her blood again. They’ll kill Mike and anyone else who stands in their way. Then they’ll use Eleven’s blood to make more psychic kids and open up brand new portals. And all will have been for naught.
It’s a dark prophecy for Stranger Things 5, Volume 3, but it doesn’t feel entirely untrue. Instead, Kali/Eight suggests that she and Eleven stay in the Bridge/the Upside Down when the Party blows it up, meeting their death alongside it and Vecna.
Will Eleven Die in Stranger Things 5‘s Ending?
Is Eleven going to go along with Kali/Eight’s plan and die in Stranger Things 5‘s final episode? It seems as though she’s willing to go along with Kali’s plan. At first, she was letting Mike convince her that they could run away to a place with a waterfall and live happily ever after. That even though this wasn’t a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, it was still “our story,” and they deserved to find the end of it as he said. But it feels like Eleven’s resolve to live is slipping, as the danger Kali paints—both for herself as a blood donor for evil and the potential cause of more monsters and death—becomes more real.

For now, Eleven and Kali are heading into the Upside Down so that Eleven can enter Vecna’s mind and destroy him at the end of Stranger Things 5, Volume 2. That’s a tall order all on its own. But we bet Eleven will make it a point in Stranger Things 5‘s ending where she has to decide if she’s willing to meet death in order to stop Dr. Kay, Dr. Brenner, and anyone else from ever creating another psychic child or accessing another dimension ever again. And we bet when she does, we’ll cry.
Stranger Things 5 Volumes 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix. Stranger Thing 5, Volume 3, or Stranger Things 5: The Finale will arrive on December 31 at 5pm PT/8pm ET.
