Stranger Things 5, Volume 2 marks the almost-end of Stranger Things. And that means many storylines are wrapping up… including romantic relationships. If you don’t want to know anything about break-ups in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, head back to the safety of our spoiler-free review.

Jonathan and Nancy, a.k.a. Jancy, Break Up in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2

Alas, we’re sorry, Jancy fans, Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler break up in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2. It kind of felt like this breakup was a long time coming for Jonathan and Nancy on Stranger Things; they were NOT communicating in Stranger Things 4 and communicating very badly in Stranger Things 5. But we know some Jancy lovers still held out hope. We love and respect all ships here at Nerdist, and so we grieve with you! And we’re sorry that the death of this relationship was the only major death on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2. But, on the bright side, few breakups have ever been as wonderful, honest, and loving as Jonthan and Nancy’s one on Stranger Things.
Why Did Jonathan and Nancy Break Up in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2?

But why this breakup for Jonathan and Nancy on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2? Well, as with many couples on dramas, a near-death experience brought the pair to the conclusion that they did not want to spend their lives together. Jonathan and Nancy were trapped in a melting Upside-Down version of Hawkins Lab after shooting a giant energy sphere they found. Turns out the energy sphere was actually exotic matter that helps sustain the Upside Down’s existence. (If we had a nickel….) When touched, this matter goes HAYWIRE and melts everything in its path.

In Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, episode 6, after being unconscious and having the roof melt below them. Jonathan and Nancy wake up to find themselves locked inside a flooding room. To survive, they climb on a table, watching as the room melts into goo around them. Without a chance of escape, they accept they are going to die. This spurs Jonathan and Nancy to finally have an honest conversation with one another on Stranger Things, the first in years. They confess what they “hate” about each other, but it’s very sweet. Nancy hates Jonathan’s favorite band, The Clash. Jonathan says he hates reading her articles because she’s just looking for praise. Jonathan and Nancy review everything they dislike about one another as they head toward their Stranger Things breakup. It’s an honest, sweet conversation about what they’ve tried to hold back.

Jonathan and Nancy also come to recognize one very important thing about their relationship on Stranger Things. “Shared trauma” has tied them together all this time. After all, way back in Stranger Things season one, Nancy, consumed by her grief over Barb, couldn’t stand that Steve wanted to just try to let go of some of what had happened. In Jonathan, she found someone who was also grieving and who understood her brainspace. At first, that felt safe for them both, but Nancy now thinks “it can be suffocating.” And it prevents either one of them from healing and moving on. Jonathan understands and agrees. Shared trauma can be an enticing basis for a relationship, but it’s not a good one.
And so, though they both love one another very much, Jonathan and Nancy break up on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2. Goodbye, Jancy!
Jonthan and Nancy Have an “Un-Proposal”

Of course, we can’t let the almost-proposal storyline on Stranger Things 5 go without tying up what happens to the ring. After their breakup, Jonathan tells Nancy that he has one last confession. He shows her he’s been carrying a ring around to propose. He thought it would fix everything, but deep down knew it wouldn’t. So instead, he offers her an “un-proposal,” saying, “Nancy Wheeler, will you…not….marry me?” We laugh, we cry, etc.
Nancy throws the ring into the goo, but it looks like the universe approves of the Jonathan and Nancy break-up on Stranger Things because while they talked, the goo had stopped bubbling. The floor is now solid, which they realize when the ring bounces off the floor rather than sinks.
Does Jonathan and Nancy Breaking Up Mean Nancy Will End Up with Steve on Stranger Things?

The natural question that follows from everything that Stranger Things has set up throughout the years is this: Does Jonathan and Nancy’s breakup in Stranger Things 5 mean that Steve and Nancy will end up together instead?
Thankfully, at least for now, the answer is, no. Nancy says that her breakup with Jonathan and her need for space are not about Steve. As of the end of Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, Steve and Nancy are not in a relationship, and it seems very unlikely they will enter one. (We hope. Apologies, all ships are valid, but Steve and Nancy do not belong together in our opinion.)
Nancy Realizes She Doesn’t Know What She Wants Yet and That’s BEAUTIFUL

Ultimately, Nancy is taking the best path for her… And it’s a path we want for her. In our opinion, Nancy should not be in a relationship with either Steve OR Jonathan at the end of Stranger Things. We wrote a piece about why Steve didn’t need to have a romantic relationship to have a complete arc. We could say the exact same thing for Nancy.
Nancy’s biggest dream is to go to college and pursue her career in journalism. She was on her way to do exactly that on Stranger Things 4. She had been accepted to Emerson College in Boston, and she was gearing up to head to her next adventure. But, instead, at the end of Stranger Thing 4, she got trapped in Hawkins as its borders shut down for quarantine. But she still wants to get out, to see the world, and experience everything else life can offer her.
Jonathan and Steve are two people she experienced a lot with on Stranger Things, but they are just TWO people in the grand scheme of things. Nancy will meet so many more in her life. It’s too soon for her to make a decision to be with either one of them permanently. Plus, Steve wants six kids and family vacations. That has NEVER felt like what Nancy has looked for in her life on Stranger Things. She wants to be in charge, she wants to have adventures, and I’m not going to call her particularly maternal.

As Nancy tells Jonathan in their breakup on Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, she needs space. She hasn’t figured out what it is she wants from her life. And hopefully, if The Party gets the chance to destroy Vecna, she’ll finally get the chance to. We want that for Nancy Wheeler. She deserves to live a life of her own for herself, not for Barb, not for Jonathan, and not for Steve.
Stranger Things 5 Volumes 1 and 2 are now streaming on Netflix. Stranger Thing 5, Volume 3, or Stranger Things 5: The Finale will arrive on December 31 at 5pm PT/8pm ET.
Rotem Rusak is the Editor-in-Chief of Nerdist. She thinks Nancy and Steve don’t need romances to be fulfilled in Stranger Things 5… Unless Eddie Munson came back, in which case, scratch that, Steve can be in love.
