Last year, Stranger Things ended on a mostly happy note for the main cast. The only main cast member who seemingly met their end was Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), who died saving everyone. Unless, of course, she didn’t die, as Mike Wheeler speculates in the show’s last moments. The ending of the show was so tidy that many fans believed in “Conformity Gate,” a theory that a secret extra episode existed. And this episode would reveal that the happy ending was a Vecna-induced illusion. Well, there was no Conformity Gate. And in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter promoting his new movie GOAT, actor Caleb McLaughlin, who played Lucas for five seasons, gives his honest opinion on Conformity Gate and whether he thinks El is alive or not:
At first, I thought the ‘Conformity Gate’ theory was dumb. I get that people want to live in this optimistic place of, ‘Oh, we want more Stranger Things,’ but I was like, ‘Guys, it’s over. It’s been ten years.’ I think people missed the concept of what the show is when they were like, ‘Oh, there’s going to be more.’ No, that’s just Mike’s imagination. That’s who he’s always been, even in season one. It’s all just storytelling.
So McLaughlin believes, just as his co-star Sadie Sink does, that El is truly dead and gone in the finale. The theory of how she might have survived is just Mike’s active imagination as a nerdy Dungeon Master. Having said that, we doubt the ever-sentimental Duffer Brothers threw in all those explanations for how she survived unless they meant it was at least possible. Right now, it’s all up to the viewer. That is, until a decade or so from now, when they decided to do the inevitable Stranger Things legacy sequel. But until then, Eleven’s final fate is really up to whether you’re a pessimist or an optimist.
