Netflix’s hit live-action adaptation of the anime One Piece is back with its second season! There are plenty of incredible fights, quotable lines, and memorable moments in these eight new episodes, but we’re here to talk about a character that makes a quick appearance in the One Piece season two’s first episode, “The Beginning of the End”, and is mentioned later in the season as well. This mysterious character plays a crucial role inthe second chapter of the series. He actually saves Luffy’s life. But who is this mysterious character who saves Luffy’s life on One Piece season two? We’re excited to tell you. But before we go any further, we’d like to give you a spoiler warning, as we’ll not only be discussing this mystery character, but also discuss other events in season two, as well as bring in some knowledge from the One Piece manga/anime.

Monkey D. Dragon Saves Luffy’s Life in Live-Action One Piece Season 2
First, let’s talk about the live-action show.
In the season’s first episode, Luffy and his crew make a stop at Loguetown, the town where the famous Pirate King Gol D. Roger was born and executed, before heading into the Grand Line in their ever-on-going search for the One Piece. The mystery character in question pops up towards the end of the episode and raises one’s eyebrow. When Luffy finds himself in a pickle and Nami, Sanji, Zoro, and Usopp are unable to lend a hand, this character swoops in and saves Luffy’s life not just once, but twice.

Though not explicitly shown, there’s reason to believe he’s responsible for the lightning strike that destroys the execution platform as Buggy the Clown prepares to bring his blade down on Luffy in One Piece season two. Then, after Luffy is apprehended by Captain Smoker, our Mystery Man character materializes seemingly out of thin air behind Smoker and stops him from taking Luffy’s life. But why would he do that? Who is this One Piece character? We are never directly told in episode one, and the adventures go on.

In One Piece season two’s sixth episode, “Nami Dearest”, however, we get a flashback in which a man known only as the Dragon is brought up. And as the show discusses the Dragon, we’re shown a picture of the same man who saved Luffy’s life in Loguetown. The Dragon is said to be a revolutionary who grows more powerful by the day and poses a huge threat to the World Government in One Piece. Before any more information on him is given, an argument between the King of Alabasta and the King of Drum ensues, and the subject is not brought up again for the remainder of the season. And that leaves us all with the same burning questions: Who is this man? Who is “Dragon”? Well, it turns out Dragon’s full name is Monkey D. Dragon, and he’s not just a fleeting cameo in One Piece season two—he’s a very important character in the One Piece anime/manga.

Just WHO Is One Piece‘s Monkey D. Dragon?
While there isn’t more shared about this individual in the live-action show for the time being, let’s take a look at what all we know about Monkey D. Dragon from the series’ source material, the still ongoing One Piece manga. (Beware all who enter here. There are some serious spoilers for Monkey D. Dragon below, spoilers that reveal a lot about why Dragon went out of his way to save Luffy’s life in live-action One Piece season two, and how he might fit into the rest of the story.)

Monkey D. Dragon Is the Leader of One Piece’s Revolutionary Army on One Piece
Dragon, or Monkey D. Dragon, also known as the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army and the world’s most dangerous criminal, is our person of interest. As previously mentioned, in the live-action One Piece, we first learn about this character in a flashback scene in season two, episode six. There, we find out in brief that he’s leading the Revolutionary Army. The One Piece manga/anime clarifies for us that Monkey D. Dragon’s Revolutionary Army is an extremely powerful military organization that directly opposes the World Government. This organization was originally formed by Dragon himself after the World Government destroyed the island of Ohara, a peaceful island of archeologists that was studying what the government deemed forbidden subjects. Monkey D. Dragon created the Revolutionary Army with the hopes of freeing nations, fostering equality, and eradicating global corruption.

Monkey D. Dragon Is Luffy’s Father
Of course, Monkey D. Dragon is important to the plot for personal reasons beyond global geo-politics. Monkey D. Dragon is, as the name suggests, the son of Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp and the father of Monkey D. Luffy. At this stage, we know that Luffy does not have a true relationship with his father. Monkey D. Dragon gave up custody of Luffy immediately, letting Garp raise him. Dragon believes that his position as a criminal would jeopardize Luffy’s life. With that said, in the One Piece anime and manga, Monkey D. Dragon approves of his son’s decision to become a pirate, something we also see in the live-action. Dragon tells his son from afar, “Huh, a pirate, hey? That’s fine if that’s what you have chosen. Go forth.”

Luffy and Monkey D. Dragon currently do not have too much of a relationship in the anime/manga, but it will be interesting to see what the live-action One Piece will make of the story between Luffy and his father.
Of additional interest, Monkey D. Dragon was a Marine in his past life in One Piece. But after witnessing an absolutely horrific genocide called the God Valley Incident, he realized he wanted no part in that kind of life. In addition to setting him on his path to becoming the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army, the God Valley Incident also allowed Monkey D. Dragon to save the life of one Red-Haired Shanks. Yes, Luffy’s actual father saved the life of Luffy’s surrogate child when Shanks was just a child.
Monkey D. Dragon’s One Piece Powers and Abilities
There’s no real knowledge of the extent of Monkey D. Dragon’s One Piece powers and abilities, though it’s hinted that he can manipulate wind and possibly storms.
Monkey D. Dragon’s First Introduction Into Live-Action One Piece Is the Same as in the Manga, Except for One Important Difference

Just like in the live-action adaptation, Dragon also saves Luffy in the manga from being beheaded by Buggy the Clown and then from having his head smashed in (or worse) by Captain Smoker while visiting Loguetown. There is, however, a slight yet specific difference in how the aftermath of this scene plays out in the show versus the manga. In live-action One Piece, while Dragon is speaking to a very far away Luffy about approving his decision to become a pirate, there’s yet another mysterious figure behind him. Dressed for adventure and sporting a hat, this mystery figure stands behind the Dragon expectantly, hinting at them being allies.
While we know who this second mystery person is, do you? Suffice to say, the pair are bonded. Give us your best guess at who that could be and if we’ll find out more about them in the upcoming third season.
Who Plays Monkey D. Dragon in One Piece Season 2?
Monkey D. Dragon is played by Rigo Sanchez in One Piece season two. Sanchez has starred in Outer Banks and Goliath. Since we got a good look at Rigo Sanchez’ Monkey D. Dragon in One Piece season two, it feels like he’ll be back to play the role again should the Dragon return in live-action One Piece season three and beyond.
Will We See Monkey D. Dragon Again in One Piece Season 3?

Monkey D. Dragon only appeared for brief moments in One Piece season two. And, if we’re going by the One Piece anime and manga, Monkey D. Dragon doesn’t necessarily have that much to do in season three of live-action One Piece, which will be sailing into the franchise’s Alabasta arc. Still, the Alabasta arc does contain some interesting narratives about Luffy’s family ties, so perhaps we’ll see Dragon again sooner rather than later.
