Across the country, many have taken off from work on November 19, and economists don’t think it’s a coincidence. Money.com, citing new data from BambooHR, reports a spike in time-off requests that coincides with the Grand Theft Auto 6 release. Compared to time-off requests from past years, Bamboo HR showed a 9% to 17% increase on the third Thursday of November.
Economists have estimated a billion-dollar loss in productivity in the United States due to the release of GTA 6 and the number of people who plan to take time off from work to play the game. We have yet to find out the global impact of GTA 6’s release, although it’s clear the game will be the biggest release of the year. Researchers project that GTA 6 will have one of the biggest, if not the biggest, gaming launches of all time.
Those who do take time off work to play GTA 6 or just mentally prepare will have a ton of fun tie-ins to indulge in, in addition to the fun of the new release itself. Rockstar has taken over the world with promotion for the new game, spending $975,000 to install a massive sign on top of the Miami Heat arena. Miami, Paris, Los Angeles and New York are decorated with GTA 6 advertisements. In Miami, fans can eat from the fast food chain, Burger Shot, that lives in the GTA universe.
Recently, Rockstar announced three GTA 6 beer products. Pulling out all the stops, No Mames Vice City is a new label exclusively for their beer product line. While Rockstar has announced the alcoholic beverage line, they have kept the cap closed on all details!
Continuing their Miami takeover, there will be a special GTA 6 NBA game. The unprecedented game will take place on November 18 between Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks. The Heat will rep Vice City in new GTA 6-themed jerseys on a one-of-a-kind Vice City court. This game will serve as the final marketing promotion before the release of GTA 6 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the 19th. Rumor has it that the PC port will release early next year, but nothing is confirmed.
Taking a day for yourself does not compare to taking off to play a video game. With the holidays around the corner, I hope people make wise choices. When the majority of the country is working on Christmas, we’ll know why… It was because they took time off to play Grand Theft Auto 6!
