Few people in entertainment were as beloved as country music icon and actress Dolly Parton, who we lost at age 80. It didn’t matter which part of the political or cultural spectrum you landed on; everyone loved Dolly. And different generations have different memories of how they first encountered her. But for kids of the Gen X and Millennial generation? It probably wasn’t through hit songs like “Jolene,” or movies like The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. It probably came via Dolly’s many appearances on TV with Jim Henson’s Muppets. And this clip of Dolly Parton singing the ’60s classic “Everyday People” with Kermit the Frog will surely bring all the feels. The clip above is actually not from The Muppet Show. Even though it seems as if it’s right out of that iconic series. It’s actually from Dolly Parton’s short-lived ABC variety show, Dolly, which ran for two seasons from 1987-1988. Miss Piggy also popped up on Dolly several times, even using her bathtub in an episode. However, that Dolly appearance was not the last time Dolly Parton sang a little duet with Kermit the Frog. She sang her hit, “Islands in the Stream,” with Kermy back in 2012, during an appearance on Good Morning America. And on Sesame Street, she once met her Muppet counterpart, Polly Darton.
Dolly Parton made a metric ton of appearances on variety shows in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. Everyone in the entertainment industry wanted to work with her, and she made every show better with her presence. Luckily, many of those appearances are on YouTube, so you can go down a Dolly Parton rabbit hole and watch as many as you can right now. There’s really no better way to pass the time than listening to the Queen of Country for an hour. Or maybe even five.
