When Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves came out in 2023, fans and critics loved it. It was the right blend of adventure, fantasy, and comedy that once made the first Pirates of the Caribbean a hit. But sadly, it didn’t fare well at the box office. So Paramount decided not to move forward on a sequel, despite writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein having written a sequel script. However, since then, the movie has grown in popularity thanks to streaming. But in an interview with Daley and Goldstein on The Discourse Podcast (via Polygon), the pair said that Hasbro, who owns the D&D rights, are still intent on finding a new studio to produce the sequel.
On the podcast appearance, Goldstein said “I think Hasbro is a big believer in it. And if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they’ll want to proceed. As are our producers.” His directing partner John Francis Daley added “It’s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one. We fell in love with the characters. And there’s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn’t filled with exposition or introduction to this family. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice.”
If a studio produces a sequel, it may not even get a theatrical release. Whoever winds up with the rights, they might just see that streaming is where the first film did well. So it might skip theatrical entirely. If that’s the case, will a legit movie star like Chris Pine want to make a straight-to-streaming sequel? Of course, the entire cast might be under contract for a second film. Daley and Goldstein’s Ryan Reynolds movie Mayday is coming soon, and Paramount hired the duo for a Star Trek movie. So if another D&D movie does happen, we may be waiting for some time if Star Trek actually goes through. But we hope that somehow, the stars align and it happens.
