Unlike most Hollywood movies, which tend to release globally around the same time, movies from non-English-speaking countries, say Japan, often take months and months to reach the US cinemas, if at all. This can build hype, as with Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider a few years ago. But for movies that have as much built-in excitement as Godzilla Minus Zero, why make people wait? To that end, Toho and GKIDS are teaming up to bring the movie to both Japan and North America within days of each other. November 3, 2026 in Japan and November 6, 2026 in North America.

The release date of November 3 holds a special significance in Godzilla’s storied legacy. That marks the date of the original theatrical release of Godzilla in 1954. Now, 72 years after the birth of the iconic creature, and three years after the global success of Godzilla Minus One (released in Japan November 3, 2023), Godzilla Minus Zero is set to continue the monster’s undeniable legacy, making its debut on Japan’s Godzilla Day 2026. Additionally, the near-simultaneous release in Japan and North America marks the first time in the history of the Japan-produced Godzilla series that such a rollout will take place. Release dates for additional territories will be announced at a later date.
Takashi Yamazaki is back as writer/director/VFX for Godzilla Minus Zero, following the richly deserved VFX Oscar win for Minus One. Godzilla Minus One, according to Yamazaki, refers to both it taking place prior to the original movie, but also that Godzilla’s destruction took Japan from a “post-war zero situation” to a “minus.” If you know math, you know that subtracting zero from a number just leaves the original number. So, Godzilla Minus Zero would just be Godzilla, wouldn’t it? That’s like saying “the day after yesterday.”

“GKIDS is proud to bring Godzilla Minus Zero to North American audiences, following the incredible global reception of Godzilla Minus One,” said David Jesteadt, President at GKIDS. “This next chapter is sure to become another defining moment for the most colossal monster ever to dominate the screen. It is only fitting that this bold, new Godzilla event be experienced in its fullest theatrical glory, and we’re honored that TOHO has entrusted us to carry this legacy forward.”
GKIDS had previously teamed with Toho for the recent 4K remaster and re-release of Shin Godzilla. The company has also been the biggest distributor of theatrical anime, including the yearly Ghibli Fest.
