Back in December of 2024, code pointed to Google working on an Android feature called Motion Cues. Designed to help people deal with motion sickness while using their phones, the feature has been renamed to Motion Assist and is now actively rolling out to Android 17 devices, with Pixel phones being the first to receive it.
When activated, visual cues are placed on top of your phone’s AI. The cues move in relation to the motion of whatever vehicle you might be traveling in, whether it’s a passenger car or public bus. Users can customize the indicators, changing the color, shape, and opacity to whatever helps the most.
In the settings for the feature, it states that, “Moving shapes appear on your screen’s edges and adjust to the device’s motion. This may help reduce motion sickness when you’re in a moving vehicle.” Users can opt to have the feature fire up automatically when motion is detected or there’s even a Quick Settings tile for it.
If your device has received access to Motion Assist, you’ll find it via Google Play settings (Settings > Your profile > All services), then under the Personal & device safety section you’ll see Motion Assist. If it’s not there for you, Google hasn’t let you in yet.
As someone who suffers from motion sickness when using my phone, I plan to utilize this as soon as it hits.
