LEGO is putting out banger after banger this year. Now, they have announced their new SpongeBob SquarePants LEGO Icons set in a super fun way. On their Instagram, LEGO recreated the show’s intro in blocks to advertise the new set.
This comes after 14 years of no new LEGO SpongeBob sets. The original product line ran from 2006 to 2012. The first set released was the Krusty Krab, which featured three minifigures (four if you include the cylindrical brick with a painted face they used to represent Plankton) and 295 pieces in total.
The new LEGO SpongeBob set includes various iconic locations and characters—very updated characters. SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick are all revamped as minifigures. Even Gary is there. Each character’s house is buildable, too. SpongeBob’s Pineapple, Squidward’s Tiki head, and even Patrick’s boulder are included. The set even features a cameo from Doodlebob.
The “Bikini Bottom” life preserver town sign, the Jellyfish Fields where SpongeBob and Patrick go jellyfishing, and the bubble stand are also buildable LEGO inclusions.
How Are Fans Feeling About This New LEGO SpongeBob Set?
Comments on the recreated intro were mixed, with some commenters excited about the set and others woeful about the over-$200 price tag.

Some also called out the irony of a kids’ show being turned into a set in LEGO’s 18+ line, and with such a high price point.

In comparison to the older sets, a lot of aspects have been improved—there is no doubt. This can be seen in the construction of the structures and the look of the minifigs. Crazy what 20 years can do. However, whether or not that improvement is worth the price tag, even for diehard fans of the Bob, is the question.
Some fans wonder if this could be the beginning of another LEGO SpongeBob renaissance, with more add-ons and smaller sets dropping. In 2020, one fan submitted a new Krusty Krab set to LEGO Ideas, but it was denied after review. If this new Bikini Bottom set does well, though, who knows how LEGO might respond.
