For a cartoon character who’s over 100 years old, Felix the Cat is surprisingly weird and edgy. The black-and-white kitty and his Magic Bag of Tricks have gone on some wild adventures over the years. Once he hit the public domain in the ’90s, he even went fully surreal in the short-lived animated series The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat. That was a formative series for my tiny mind. Now, the wonderful, wonderful cat returns in a suitably magical way. Wizards of the Coast announced Secret Lair x Felix the Cat: Magic Bag of Tricks, the latest Magic: The Gathering collaboration.
“Felix the Cat is iconic with a rich history of surrealism that is the perfect metaphor for how we evolve visual boundaries for Magic through Secret Lair,” said Secret Lair Senior Director Lindsey Bartell. “So naturally we would want him to be a part of the Cats Are the Best Superdrop. We were so proud to be able to accomplish this in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences and bring together Magic and Felix in such a unique and special way.”
The resulting cards are gloriously exaggerated and somewhat creepy. Take a look at all the unhinged new cards below. Whoever thought to turn Felix into a Barrowgoyf is a diabolical genius.
