Ever since Disney+ launched in 2019, the streaming service has been reviving one Disney television series after another. Now, they’re setting their sights on their Fox properties. According to Deadline, a revival of Malcolm in the Middle is coming to the streamer. It will feature returning actors Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek, reprising their roles as Malcolm and his parents Hal and Lois. Also back is series creator Linwood Boomer, who will write all four new episodes. Director Ken Kwapis will direct all four. This will be a brief series, with only four episodes total. Here’s the official synopsis for the revival:
Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.
So what about Malcolm’s siblings? Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield, who played Malcolm’s order brothers Francis and Reese in the original series, are likely coming back. It’s just not official yet. However, Erik Per Sullivan, who played Malcolm’s younger brother Dewey, is almost certainly not returning. He retired from acting over fifteen years ago and never came back for any of the reunions. Remember how all those Brady Bunch reunions had a “Fake Jane” or a “Fake Cindy?” Maybe they’ll recast, and we’ll have a “Fake Dewey.”
The original Malcolm in the Middle ran for seven seasons and over 150 episodes, from January 2000 to May 2006. Although it doesn’t often get the credit it deserves, it popularized the single-camera sitcom. It successfully moved away from the traditional sitcom format that had been popular on TV for decades at that point. The series also paved the way for popular shows like The Office and Modern Family, which used the same format. No word yet on when the new Malcolm in the Middle will drop, but we imagine Disney+ would like it to debut sometime in 2025, for the show’s 25th anniversary.
