Riding the hype of Barbie, Mattel is coming in hot with an arsenal of 16 brand new movies to expand the Mattel Cinematic Universe. We’ve already gotten a preview of M. Night Shyamalan’s twisted Magic 8 Ball series and the upcoming Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie starring Vin Diesel. Now, we’re gettin our first look at another one of Mattel’s upcoming projects. It’s a car-centric action adventure starring John Cena. Inspired by the popular toy brand, Matchbox: The Movie will rev its engine on Apple TV this fall.
First Look Images of the Matchbox Movie

Images and the film’s release date dropped at Tuesday’s Apple TV Press Day. Matchbox follows a group of childhood friends. Cena will play an undercover CIA agent who, after returning to his small town, gets tangled up in an high-stakes international mess. Alongside the Peacemaker star are Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, and Arturo Castro. As is the trend with all of Mattel’s upcoming projects, the Apple TV original film Matchbox centers around the popular automobile toys from 1953.
Extraction’s Sam Hargrave will direct the action-packed flick. It’s unclear how exactly Mattel will incorporate the Matchbox brand into movie, but we have our first glimpse. My guess is that we’re in for a lot of high-speed chase sequences. The movie also stars Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira, and Golshifteh Faranhan. Matchbox rolls into action on October 9 on Apple TV.

To reiterate, Matchbox is just one of many curious projects Mattel is coming out with soon. We cover a good bit of Peacemaker here, so we’re pretty happy to see the former WWE star return for another adrenaline-packed movie about cars. Itching to see what else we’ll be able to pick out once Mattel releases the trailer. Hopefully a car flip or two.
