New STAR TREK Movie in the Works, Will Be Unconnected to Previous Films Eric Diaz | amznusa.com

It was very recently learned that Paramount was scrapping a fourth Star Trek feature with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock. But that doesn’t mean they’re slowing down on developing Star Trek movies. Via Deadline, we’ve learned that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will write and direct a new Star Trek movie. One unconnected from any previous version. The John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein team did the criminally underappreciated Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves for Paramount, so we’re excited to see what they will bring to their new Star Trek movie. In addition, they directed the hit comedy Game Night and wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The New Star Trek Movie Will Be a Fresh Take

Apparently, this new Star Trek movie will have nothing to do with any of the different versions of a new Star Trek film Paramount has attempted to get going over the past decade. The last film, Star Trek Beyond, underperformed at the box office in 2016. Ever since, Paramount has announced several new Star Trek movies, none of which ever got the greenlight. This Star Trek film will be an all-new take, apparently with all-new characters. Given the team in charge’s previous films, we expect the new Star Trek movie to have strong comedic flair, even if it’s not an outright comedy, probably in the vein of their Dungeons & Dragons movie. We likely won’t see this movie before 2027, missing Trek’s sixtieth anniversary, which is a shame.

We Thought Paramount Would Reboot The Next Generation, But We’re Glad They Are Being Bold

We’re actually excited that whatever this new Star Trek movie is going to be, it’ll feature new characters. We fully expected Paramount to play it safe and reboot Star Trek: The Next Generation in the Kelvin timeline, which will still probably happen one day. But we hope that this Star Trek movie will feature a brand new Enterprise, set decades after the time of Picard and his crew. Why not jump forward a century and show us the Enterprise-J, in a version of the Star Trek galaxy we’ve never seen before? Oh, and as much as we don’t like the idea, it would not surprise us if, as with the Halloween franchise, they just call this new movie, Star Trek.

For now, we don’t know much more about this new movie. But watch this space (the final frontier).
