A ton of The Lord of the Rings content has been hitting fans lately. There’s a brand new The Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, there’s The Rings of Power season three on the way, and now there’s a new open-world RPG The Lord of the Rings coming soon from Warhorse Studios. Technically, Warhorse defines the new game as “an open world Middle-earth RPG”—so it’s too early to know which The Lord of the Rings/Tolkien stories (if any) this game will tell. But quite clearly, this game will let us take a stroll through Middle-earth and explore the ins and outs of that fantastical place. And who doesn’t love that? In addition, Warhorse Studios revealed that it’s working on “a new Kingdom Come adventure.”
What can we make of this? Well, the language on both ends is pretty vague. As we mentioned, “an open world Middle-earth RPG” could take us in many directions. But Warhorse Studios has proven itself up to the challenge of a nuanced and detailed world with its Kingdom Come games. (Although, we beg of you, leave AI at the door.) An open-world The Lord of the Rings game will allow the studio to be even more creative, because of the lack of history and the great fantasy involved. And we’re excited to see how this LOTR game will form up.
Meanwhile, fans have been eagerly anticipating an announcement for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3. But that’s not exactly what has been promised here. Instead, Warhorse notes “a new Kingdom Come adventure” is on the way. And that, again, could take us many places. Still, we’re excited to dive back into the world of Bohemia, or modern-day Czech Republic, for more incredible, story-driven adventures and beautiful settings.
When will this Lord of the Rings RPG and Kingdom Come game release? For now, Warhorse Studios simply says, “We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right.” Consider us seated in our Hobbit holes.
