We now live in a world saturated with comic book movies. But it wasn’t always like this. And you might be surprised that the first genuine comic book blockbuster not about Superman or Batman was 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Now, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael are coming back to theaters for a limited engagement this summer. Fathom Entertainment and New Line Cinema will release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on August 17 and 20 to theaters, and you can check out a special trailer for the 35th anniversary screening down below:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ 35th Anniversary theater return will also present the Turtles Unmasked featurette along with the film. The creators of TMNT: Evolution, Mutation & Reboot produced this featurette that plays before the movie. It features never before-seen footage from the archives, extended scenes, and home-recorded behind-the-scenes footage. Not to mention a 1-on-1 time and commentary with director Steve Barron.

Fun fact: Aside from TMNT, Barron also directed some of the most iconic music videos of all time, like Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” A-ha’s “Take on Me,” and Madonna’s “Burning Up.”

If you weren’t around when the movie came out, it’s hard to properly describe the fever-pitch that Turtle Mania had a hold on the world at this time. Besides the cartoon, comics, and toys, there were live shows and all kinds of other merchandise everywhere. The pop culture climate was ripe for the “Heroes in a Half-Shell” to become a blockbuster movie. The film came out right at the peak of the Turtles’ popularity. And in inflation-adjusted numbers, it would have made over 400 million dollars. You could say it was the Minecraft of its day. This release is the perfect opportunity for the now-grown-up ’90s kids to share the original Turtles with their own children.

Tickets for the 35th anniversary screening of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are now available at Fathom Entertainment.
