It’s Fallout-ception. With the popularity of Prime Video’s Fallout series, based on the popular series of games, it’s no surprise that the Fallout games now want to incorporate the mythology of the TV show into their world. Handily, the current Fallout game, Fallout 76, is an open-world multiplayer RPG addition to Fallout‘s world. And that means the game is always expanding and evolving, making it a great place to easily work in parts of Prime Video’s Fallout series. The one catch is that Fallout 76 takes place 25 years after the bombs drop in the Great War. In contrast, the Fallout series takes place over 200 years after the nuclear event. Normally, this would mean no characters could cross over. BUT happily, we have Walton Goggins’ The Ghoul. And yes, The Ghoul, voiced by Goggins himself, will appear in Fallout 76.

How Can The Ghoul Appear in Fallout 76?
But wait, if the Prime Video series takes place 200 years after Fallout 76, how can any of its characters appear? Well, it turns out Ghouls are able to survive for VERY long amounts of time in the radiated landscape of the wasteland. Ghouls lose their nose and any other cartilage and their skin burns and flakes from the radioactive environment, but as we’ve written before, “the same radiation that transformed them also saved them from death. It also gave ghouls expanded lifespans and super-healing properties. Ghouls aren’t immortal and still have to eat and drink (which is easier in a wasteland because they lose their sense of taste and smell). But thanks to radioactive regeneration, they can withstand many diseases, ailments, and injuries as they live for a very long time.
Even among Ghouls though, THE Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins has an exceptionally long timespan, and might be the longest living Ghoul of all. Regardless, Goggins’ Ghoul is around 25 years after the bombs go off AND 200ish years after the bombs go off, making him the perfect character to cross over between the Fallout show and the Fallout 76 game.
The Ghoul Appear Will Appear in “Burning Springs” Update of Fallout 76
Where will we find The Ghoul, though? The Ghoul will leave the world of the series and head to Fallout 76 via the “Burning Springs” update. A release shares, “You’ll be traveling westward towards Burning Springs! Taking place in rural Ohio, it’s our largest map expansion to Fallout 76,” and adds, “Prepare to become one of the meanest Bounty Hunters around, as the Burning Springs update introduces Bounty Hunting to your Fallout 76 experience. A major new piece of content here to give you the opportunity to find and eliminate some of the area’s largest threats. We’re extremely excited to share that The Ghoul from the Fallout TV Show on Amazon Prime will be joining us in Burning Springs!”
But this is just the start of the “Burning Springs” update to Fallout 76. Players can expect the following:
The main questline for Burning Springs is just the start of your story in this new region. Planned as the beginning chapter for a story that spans multiple updates, this quest works as an introduction to characters that you’ll end up spending more time with down the line.
With a new questline for you to complete, two new public events, the introduction of Bounty Hunting, plus a load of additional content (including new fish and a local legend to catch), Burning Springs is our largest update since Wastelanders back in 2020.
What Will The Ghoul Be Doing in Fallout 76?
What’s Walton Goggins’ Ghoul up to in Fallout 76, though? Well, it sounds like he’s about to become your boss. Bethesda notes of The Ghoul’s appearance in Fallout 76, “Players can interact with this iconic character, who hosts bounty missions that can be found all throughout Burning Springs. New bounties will always be rolling in, so players should check with The Ghoul often to pick up the latest bounties – and their rewards upon completion, of course. While not available as a playable character or companion, players can encounter The Ghoul at ‘The Last Resort’ in Highway Town and see which of the many wanted folk in Burning Springs will be the next target.”
We’d love to play as The Ghoul and have The Ghoul join us on adventures, but we can accept that’s probably too much potential canon-breaking for The Ghoul’s character in the series, which is still developing. Still, we feel excited to see The Ghoul officially become a part of Fallout‘s games.
When Will The Ghoul Be Available in the Fallout Games?
The Ghoul and the “Burning Springs” update are currently available in Fallout 76‘s Public Test Server. The full update will be released in Fallout 76 proper in December.
Will Walton Goggins Voice The Ghoul in Fallout 76?

Yes! Walton Goggins’ likeness and voice will arrive in Fallout 76. Goggins will voice the game’s version of The Ghoul.
Is Fallout 76‘s The Ghoul Canon to the Prime Video Series?
Good question. It’s too soon to know if Fallout 76‘s new Ghoul material will become official canon to the Prime Video series. But since the Fallout series is adding canon to the world of the games, it kind of makes sense that the games should be allowed to add to th canon of the TV show.
Will Any Other Fallout Series Characters Appear in Fallout‘s Games?
Currently, only The Ghoul is making the jump from show to games in Fallout‘s world. But we wouldn’t be surprised to see Lucy, Maximus, or even Hank pop up somewhere before long.
Happy bounting hunting!
