THE PUNISHER: ONE LAST KILL Lets Frank Find a New Purpose (Review) Tai Gooden | amznusa.com

It is hard to believe that Jon Bernthal first began playing the Punisher a.k.a. Frank Castle back in 2016. That’s a decade of rage, kills, tears, revenge, and a whole lot of scathing one liners. We last saw the Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again’s first season but he was nowhere to be found during the height of Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force takeover of NYC. Why? Well, Frank was pretty darn busy fighting some serious spiritual and physical forces. We see what goes down in The Punisher: One Last Kill, which does brutal and bloody kills with style but feels kinda lacking in the substance department.

Marvel Television/Disney+

Frank is lying low after taking out what he believes are the last collective of people who were involved with his family’s death. He’s out of the public eye and trying to reckon with a big question: What happens when there is no one left to punish? The answer is himself as he goes into a mental spiral, seeing key figures from his life and contemplating ending it all. We’ve certainly seen him parse through some emotional upheaval, especially in his Netflix series, but it has never been quite this dire. It is what happens when a very broken person is left alone for far too long with their thoughts and memories.

At one point, he walks down an NYC street, which is its own version of a war zone. Frank tunes everything out, no longer jumping into the chaos like the soldier he’s always been. But, he cannot seem to find any peace. That’s probably not a terrible thing because, as always, discord comes knocking on his door. Now, he’s the target of someone who wants to punish him for his deeds. And that leads to a whole lot of fightin’, shootin’, hootin’, and hollerin’.

If that’s what you mainly came for, you’ll be pleased. Jon Bernthal is always a stellar physical force who delivers the range of emotions for Frank quite well. The Punisher: One Last Kill does not really what many fans want in terms of setting the stage for what’s to come. It’s just ole Frank being Frank and getting back into what he does best, without vengeance being his primary driver anymore. He makes a couple of pointed choices and reasons with himself and his dearly departed loved ones, particularly his daughter Lisa. It’s a very self-contained story that you can get into with minimal knowledge about Frank Castle’s live-action journey overall.

And you know what? That’s fine. Did we really need this special? Not really. Did I like seeing Jon Bernthal keep his beard and sexy haircut for the very brief 45 minute-ish special. Hell yes.
