The Super Mario Bros. Movie captured a whole lot of gold coins. It took in a whopping $1.36 billion at the global box office, guaranteeing that just like the legendary video game franchise itself, we’ll be getting a whole bunch of Mario-titled sequels for a long time. Now we know what the first is called. Nintendo announced its animated hit’s follow-up is titled after one of its most beloved entries ever. But just what is the title of The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s sequel? Get ready for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Nintendo and Illumination revealed the official title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which also got a title announcement teaser trailer, is taking its name from the franchise’s critically acclaimed and beloved 2007 Wii game Super Mario Galaxy. And we do mean beloved. Both the original Super Mario Galaxy game and its 2010 follow-up, Super Mario Galaxy 2, still sit 4th and 5th, respectively, on Metacritic’s best games of all-time. That’s quite a feat.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will see the return of Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi. Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) are also back for more animated fun. Nintendo and Illumination said they will announce “additional characters and voice cast” at a later date.
The team behind the camera is also remaining the same for The Super Mario. Bros Movie sequel. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are once again working with a script from writer Matthew Fogel for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. And Brian Tyler is once again composing the score.
As for what we can expect from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s plot, its name is a pretty big hint. This sequel is guaranteed to be out of this world. We bet, like its predecessor, it will also take in a whole lot of gold coins. We’ll find out when it takes off in theaters on April 3, 2026.
