There’s something strangely fun about spinning a globe and landing on a random radio station from the other side of the planet. That’s the whole appeal of Radio Garden. It turns live radio into a kind of digital world tour.
The site drops you onto a 3D globe covered in glowing green dots. Each dot is a live radio station somewhere on Earth. You can move around the planet, zoom in, and click any station to start listening. I’ve listened to sweet late-night jazz from a station in Tokyo and randomly popped into chaotic live soccer match commentary in Buenos Aires. I even found a small community station in Iceland that sounded fascinating despite not understanding a single word that was said.
Radio Garden doesn’t require an account to use, so you can just hop in and explore. It scratches the same itch as channel surfing on old cable TV, except now the channels come from nearly every country on earth.
The project started in 2016 as a collaboration between the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and several universities. The original idea was to show how radio connects people across borders. That spirit still comes through when you use it. Local stations feel personal in a way playlists and algorithms don’t.
While it certainly can be used like a music app, I feel like Radio Garden’s appeal is in its diversity. It’s less like a Spotify alternative and more like a window into other places. It’s great background noise while working, but it’s also oddly calming just hearing normal life happening somewhere far away.
Give it a spin the next time your usual playlists start feeling stale or you just need some company from a far off land.
