Uber taps GPT-4o for AI assistant to guide drivers to go electric Vignesh Karunanidhi | amznusa.com

Uber has introduced an AI assistant powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o technology. The new feature is expected to be pivotal in its goal to lower emissions.

According to the announcement made by the company’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, the tool is designed to help drivers ease the transition to electric vehicles (EVs).

The announcement came during this year’s Go-Get Zero event in London on Tuesday. At the event, the company unveiled its plans to launch the AI chatbot in the US early next year and expand globally.

Uber drivers are adopting EVs 5 times faster

This new tool is part of Uber’s broader strategy to support its pledge of $800 million to assist driver partners in switching entirely to EVs by 2040.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi highlighted the company’s progress, stating, “Uber drivers are adopting EVs five times faster than the average motorist in the U.S., Canada and Europe.” She added that almost 30% of all miles driven on Uber in London are now electric.

The AI-powered chatbot will offer customized answers to each driver’s city. According to the announcement, this will make the shift to electric vehicles more accessible and less daunting.

Uber plans to expand the chatbot’s capabilities in early 2025 to address queries beyond EV-related topics. In addition to the AI assistant, the company is launching several complementary initiatives to support its sustainability goals.

Ubers plans to launch a mentorship program

The company is also introducing a mentorship program to connect experienced EV drivers with those looking to make the switch. In addition, Uber is also offering a $50,000 award for top merchants on its food delivery platform.

The company is also organizing a series of pop-up events to experience EVs in person. In London, users can try out the Lotus Eletre. Additionally, those in Los Angeles, Dallas and Miami will have the opportunity to reserve rides in Rivian vehicles.

These efforts come as Uber reports that about 180,000 of its drivers are transitioning to EVs monthly in North America and Europe.
