Back in September, Microsoft released optional preview update KB5124010, which caused issues with Windows 11’s built-in decoding of Dolby Digital AC-3 audio. The bug caused some games and apps to crash when changing volume or using certain audio functions. In some cases, apps and games even failed to launch.
Most programs weren’t affected as long as they relied on their own audio decoding components. But for any that relied on the built-in offerings in Windows 11, a fix was desperately needed from Microsoft.
According to BleepingComputer, that fix is already here. Microsoft has confirmed that the AC-3 audio issue has been resolved in October’s KB5127648 update for Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.
If you’re still experiencing issues with Dolby Digital AC-3 on Windows 11, you’re advised to install the latest update as soon as you can via Windows Update (navigate to Settings → Windows Update).
Note that while update KB5127648 also fixes some other issues—like unexplained mouse glitches in games and black screens after logging on—it also introduces a different bug that affects Smart App Control.
