Samsung Electronics is ramping up the security of its AI-powered home appliances by expanding Samsung Knox and introducing blockchain-based solutions.
The company announced these developments at the Samsung Developer Conference 2024 (SDC24). Samsung stressed its commitment to protecting interconnected devices in the age of AI home appliances.
Samsung launching blockchain-powered security
Samsung plans to extend Knox Matrix to its range of home appliances. It was initially developed for mobile devices and TVs.
Knox Matrix is a security solution that utilizes private blockchain technology to protect connected devices and networks. The system comprises three main components.
First is Trust Chain, which allows connected devices to monitor each other for security threats and notify users of threat-blocking measures. Second, Cross Platform ensures consistent security standards across devices running on different operating systems and platforms.
Third, Credential Sync encrypts and synchronizes data shared between devices to maintain security.
Samsung intends to implement these features in major products, including the refrigerator with AI Family Hub, starting next year.
Samsung to introduce Passkey in 2025
Samsung also announced the introduction of Passkey to its AI home appliances in 2025. This digital credential will allow users to log in to home appliance apps and websites using smartphone biometrics such as fingerprints.
Furthermore, Samsung plans to incorporate Knox Vault into its AI home appliances next year. This hardware-based security solution will store sensitive personal information, such as passwords and biometric data, on a separate security chip.
This protects it from OS-based security breaches and physical hacks.
“Samsung will continue to develop security solutions and achieve new certifications to ensure that users can experience peace of mind when using AI home appliances and services in Samsung’s ecosystem,” Miyoung Yoo, EVP and Head of the Software Development Team, Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics, stated.
Samsung’s first entry into blockchain tech began with the launch of Knox Matrix and the Samsung blockchain wallet in 2022.
