Super Bowl LXI Gets STAR WARS Real-Time Animated Simulcast Michael Walsh | amznusa.com

Disney recently announced Super Bowl LXI was heading to its streaming site. Disney+ will simulcast the ESPN at ABC broadcast. But that’s not the only brand synergy we can expect for this year’s big game on February 14, because it’s also going to the galaxy far, far away. Super Bowl LXI will also air live as an animated Star Wars football clash.

ESPN, Lucasfilm, and Disney are bringing the NFL to Star Wars with a real-time, animated edition of the Super Bowl. Officially known as Star Wars Funday Football, it will air on Disney+, the Disney Channel, and Disney XD. The game will also feature “iconic characters from across the Lucasfilm franchise.” While we can guess at which famous (or infamous) figures will appear in the game, we know one important member of the galaxy far, far away who will definitely be involved. C-3PO himself, Anthony Daniels, will get in on the football fun by lending his voice to the broadcast.

Fans around the globe will get to watch Star Wars Funday Football. It will air in Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, Canada (TSN+), the Netherlands, sub-Saharan Africa, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It will then also be on demand at Disney+ shortly after after the telecast in all of those markets as well as United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Korea, and more.

The broadcast will mark the fourth time ESPN has given fans an alternative way to watch an NFL game with Funday Football. They previously did animated real-time broadcasts using characters fromToy Story, The Simpsons, and Monsters, Inc. They’ve also given NHL and NBA games the live aninated treatment with Big City Green and Mickey Mouse and friends. But those were all regular season games. And this isn’t just a playoff game, this is the Super Bowl.

Before we get to that championship game, though, football fans will be seeing a lot more Star Wars on ESPN. Beginning today ESPN’s daily SportsCenter show on Disney+ will feature Star Wars “Hyperspace Highlights.” That ill include showing plays from the previous evening’s Monday Night Football “presented with a Star Wars visual theme.” And starting next week on October 26, SC+ will include an animated Darth Vader. He will be “interviewing an NFL player participating in that night’s Monday Night Football game.”

Our only regret is Darth Vader never got to interview Bill Belichick. That would have been the greatest moment in brand synergy history.

*I’m a Patriots fan. I can say this but you can’t.
